K2D Team 2025

August 2025

The K2D callsign was assigned to the International Dog Day team operating in USA. The team was coordinated by Caryn, KD2GUT.

K2D operated all bands on SSB and CW from 20. August until 26. August

Here is Caryn's report on K2D

With nine operators working like - what else? - dogs, our team knew there were going to be powerful moments during our six-day activation with the special event callsign K2D.

As the International Dog Day chasers related their stories to our team via SSB and CW, we were reminded again and again what this event was all about: the older man who is grateful to the yellow Lab who is his daughter’s loyal service dog; the man with two Corgis who credits their canine energy with keeping him active and on his feet; the chaser who had to cut his QSO a little short because it was time to shampoo his goldendoodle.

We heard familiar themes: The triumph of bringing home a shelter rescue.

The emotional account of why the dog bed in the house and the nearby feed bowls are no longer filled. A few operators logged QSOs despite no longer being dog owners - their best intentions thwarted by allergies, personal circumstances or age.

Some chasers said they had become donors to local and national animal rescue groups; one said he trains herding dogs for a living.

Team Kilo Two Dog logged 1,698 QSOs. What a dog pack! Danny NF4J, Mike N2PPI, James KB2FMH, Brian K3ES, Wayne AC9HP, Teri KO4WFP, Rem K6BBQ and Dale W7HLO.

Coordinating the schedules and operating alongside them, I heard those stories too. Like our colleagues in Europe and the UK, our operating protocol gave new meaning to the phrase: "PARK AND BARK." Ending our QSOs with a 73 and a "woof woof" or a "wuff wuff," we often got it sent back to us.

In 2026, we will return to the air as K0DOG, the callsign for the newly formed Dog Day Radio Amateur Radio Club. We hope everyone out there will once again be ready to support the cause and run with the pack. See you in August! 73 and woof woof,

New this year!

For 2025 International Dog Day stations used Hamlog Online.
Every station uploaded every contact to Hamlog.Online . Four awards are available on the Hamlog site to anyone making contacts with IDD stations.

Calling stations can check that they are "in the log" and were able to see when a particular SES was due to be active, then review how many more contacts they needed to get any one of the 4 awards by going to Hamlog.Online/idd

Awards

The awards are

  • Perky Puppy - the basic award for contacting at least one IDD station
  • The Chaser Trilogy - contacts with any three IDD stations
  • The International - contacting stations in every participating country
  • The Full Kennel - contacting every participating Special Event Station for IDD 2025

More stations were on the air in 2024 than ever before, supporting International Dog Day. This year there are even more, in more countries.

On this site we will be adding information information about this year's event - 26. August 2025 - with stories and pictures of operators and their dogs. There are stories from those who contacted Dog Day stations in 2024 and photos from them, too.

Of course, there are many ways anyone can help with the well-being of dogs everywhere.
